The first cruise-in at Kettering’s Lathrem Senior Center was a success in every aspect. There were a couple dozen meticulously detailed classic vehicles, a nostalgic music backdrop, the availability of an inexpensive picnic dinner — and plenty of gearhead conversation.

“It’s fantastic, just fantastic,” volunteer deejay and emcee “Big John” Tschirhart said as he played rock 'n’ roll classics from the ’50s and ’60s.

“We had 20 car exhibitors sign up in advance, and we have more showing up.”

As a welcome interlude in an otherwise rainy week, the sun reigned throughout the late afternoon/evening on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Exhibitors and spectators mingled in the display area and dined at tables set up outside the center. Senior program supervisor Nan Buehrer roved around taking snapshots and directing the efforts of center staff and volunteers. “This benefits our senior transportation program,” she said.
